Poems Using Onomatopoeias

Hello Aspiring Poets!

Let's start a series of poem writing. This month let's focus on poems using Onomatopoeias. What's an onomatopoeia? It's a word that sounds like the sound it is describing such as buzz, hiss, etc...

Let's try writing poems that have at least three onomatopoeias in them. Teachers, interpreters, students, and parents: Please try this!

Again for confidentiality sake, use only your first name. Have fun!

Day in the Cats’ Life
by Debbie Potts

Waking with cat in the crux of my arm – snore
Gently petting her chest and head – purrrrr
Moving her, cranky from achy joints – hissss
Calling cats, they greet me and answer – meow
Begging in front of food dish, tail – swish, swish
Fill food dishes with chow – ping, ping, ping, ping
Add water to dishes – splash
Play with toys – clinkity, clank
Baby kitty drops toys in water – plop, plop
Opens dresser drawers – th…ud
Drinks water – slurp, slurp, slurp
Eating cat food morsels – crunch, crunch
Knocking off comb – clank, clank
Prying door open – creek
Sharpening the claws – scratch, scratch
Balancing in precarious places – teeter totter
Play with sister – pounce, pounce, slap
Hunts flies - zzz, zzz, zzz, thud, slap, smack, slurp
Content, ready for a nap, cleaning – lick, lick
Pawing to make a soft bed – squish, squish, squish
Curls into a ball in bed - snore

Friday at 2:45 PM

Head is BOOMING
Eyelids blinking, head is drooping down.

Buzzing talking
Students giggling, pointing and laughing.

"Is she sleeping? No she's blinking!"
Creaking, standing ready to go.

The sun radiates its warmth
A squirrel bounds across the yard
Chimes on the porch tinkle in the breeze
The screen door slams
Feet pound the path,
racing to the treehouse

Transporting me to a faraway place
Aahhhhh filling my mind with wonder
A tear or two drip-drips down my face
EEK! A sudden fright, a blanket I huddle under
Poof!!! The magical world of reading

My favorite sounds

Pitter Patter, little feet running to my room
Jumping on the floor, boom boom boom boom
Giggling that make me smile, He he ha ha
Soft tiny voices sing our favorite songs, La la la
My favorite sounds
The sounds of home
The sounds of my children
