This October's challenge is to write poetry relating to autumn. In our study skills class at South Elgin High School, we have been working on three types of poetry: ABC, Cinquain, and Haiku. Please try different styles and post your favorite to this blog. Here's our class ABC poem on Halloween:
In-class ABC Halloween Poem
Autumn falling leaves
Bats roam the sky in the night
Cat riding on witch’s broom
Dead come back to life
Elegant costumes walk the night
Frigid cold nights
Ghosts giving frights
Halloween is here
Igor stalks the Trick Or Treaters
Jason stalks the campgrounds
Kids yelling “Trick or Treat”
Little kids dressed up for the night
Mounds of candy on the children’s beds
Nightmares haunt children’s dreams
Owls hoot
Pumpkins light the street
Quite and creepy haunted houses
Running, screaming from monsters
Scared three-year-olds
Taste of candy, sweetens my mouth
Under the covers, all cozy and warm
Voldemort almost had me
Waiting anxiously for morning to come
Xcessive candy – sugar overdose
Yawning – eyes heavy
Zzzzzzzzzz

Autumn
Leaves falling
Swirling, dancing, floating,raking
Cooler weather, warming sweater
Autumn
By Ann
Football by Alex
All American football players
Benching 300 pounds
Catching all the balls
Defending our turf
Ending another career
Fighting for a position
Gashes on their arms
Hating the other team
Icing bruises
Joking around
Kicking off
Lining up
Moving the ball
Nailing the opponent
Opening a hole
Performing our best
Questioning the ref
Reading the quarterback
Sounding our battle cry
Tackle hard
Unite the time
Victory in our sight
Washing away the blood
Xercising every day
Yelling at the opponent
Zing past the defender
Night Time – Nathan
As the sun sets
Blue sky goes dark
Cats and dogs comes in
Dinner was eaten
Earth becomes calm
Feet become calm
Gnats roam the air
Hourly shows run
Ian yawns
Jobs are done for the day
Kids go to sleep
Looking forward to tomorrow
Moms put them to sleep
Nothing but kids snoring
Other than the parents
Parents lie in bed
Quiet and tired because of the day
Unable to stay awake
Ready to fall asleep
Steady their eyes go
To fall asleep
Vulnerable to the nights sounds
Xausting day ahead
Yellow the moon shines
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

A Halloween Limerick
Its time to go say trick-or-treat
A lot of people I will meet
I'll see ghosts and black cats
And witches with hats
And chocolate candy I will eat
